BERHAMPUR: Teaching in all 31 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in
the state came to a standstill on Wednesday as around 1,000 teaching and
non-teaching staff of the Centre-run schools launched an indefinite strike. The
staff are demanding pension benefits under CCS (central civil services)
Pension, 1972.
"We have protested several times. Since the government has not considered our demand, we launched the strike for indefinite period. The employees in state have joined the all-India strike," said Srinibash Rao, general secretary, Odisha state unit, All India Navodaya Vidyalaya Staff Association ( AINVSA), while talking to TOI.
While the managements of Central Tibetan schools, National Open School, Ignou, NCERT, and some other autonomous bodies have granted the benefits of CCS Pension 1972 to all their employees, who joined before January, 2004, Navodaya vidyalaya teachers remain the only teachers in the Union Government services going without the pension benefits, he said
The other demands of the staff include sanctioning of 10% special allowance to non-teaching staff and increase in house rent allowance. The protesting staff members have also called for boycotting the selection test, on the basis of which students get admission, scheduled for February 10.
The district administration would look after the hostel inmates as the staff had apprised it of the strike, Rao said.
The Navodaya vidyalayas were set up to impart quality education to talented under-privileged children in rural areas. There is a school in every district in the state except Malkanagiri which has two. The students are taught from Class VI to XII.

Barely days before their annual
exams, students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) have been forced to
return home in the wake of the strike by the JNV staff.
The nationwide indefinite strike,
which began on Wednesday, is to demand implementation of the Central Civil
Services (Pension) Rules, 1972.
Over a 100 teaching and non-teaching
members of the Joint Action Committee of JNVs gathered outside the Town Hall
here on Wednesday to register their protest for not being included in the
pension scheme, a demand that they have been making for 25 years.
“There are 27 Navodaya schools in
Karnataka and staff members of at least 25 have started the strike. Each school
has about 40 staff members and about 500 students. We have sent the children
back home. We work hard to ensure good education to the children as most of
them come from rural areas. But our demands are not being met,” said K. Vijay
Kumar, president of the committee.
He pointed out that other Central
government employees such as those in Kendriya Vidyalayas had been included in
the pension scheme. But, JNV employees have been “neglected” by the Ministry of
Human Resource Development, he said.
Among the 19 demands the committee
is placing before the Union government are allotment of residence allowance for
the non-teaching staff and fixing of work hours for them as they work for
almost 24 hours.
